When Push Comes To Love: A Civil Way to Give Your Dreams a Fighting Chance

You’ve got an unwavering flair for fashion, but shift manager at the neighborhood Shoe Chalet was clearly not an anticipated stopover on your chosen career path.

A charismatic clairvoyant once told you Lady Luck was on your side, yet you quickly discovered that for her to truly shine it was imperative you also have her unsung siblings Grit and Grind in your corner.

You ordered turkey on rye but the ignoramus served you up salami on sourdough.

WTF!

Simply told, despite your good intentions, regardless of your best laid plans, life has a calculating way of not always giving you what you want, oftentimes coercing you into doing things you don’t necessarily want to do, and/or steering you in directions you wouldn't normally go.

Sometimes this can lead you to a crossroad.

Other times it can bring you to a boiling point.

In either case you pretty much have two choices with which to respond:

  1. Brush it off and keep in mind that everything never goes right.

  2. Summon your rebel yell and declare to the civilized world that enough is enough.

If perchance you happen to be grappling with such a quandary and feel choice number two sounds like the one for you, then it’s quite possible the time has come to take up arms and fight for what’s rightfully yours.

However, before you reach for your battle axe and come out swinging you might want to take a moment to size up your adversary(s). Maybe even reel in that take no prisoners attitude a notch or two, because like they say, the best offense is often a good defense.

"Life will bring you pain all by itself," said Milton H. Erickson, "Your responsibility is to create joy."

That being said, by all means, fight on. Just keep sight of the fact that your mission isn’t to defeat something evil and ugly, it’s to defend something descent and honorable.

That is to say, you’re not fighting against something, you’re fighting for something, and this can take a whole other skill set, not to mention an entirely different mindset.

Dr. Wayne Dyer once declared,

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”

Note: This can also greatly affect the way you approach them.

Make no mistake, protecting and preserving your everyday hopes and dreams is destined to be a long and hard-fought battle, one besieged with a legion of formidable obstacles and opposition.

It can prove to be an extremely hostile environment.

There will be pain and suffering.

There will be blood (sweat and tears).

There will be times when you’ll have no other choice but to forcibly stand your ground.

But they’ll also be those times when a less aggressive line of attack might serve you better than a full-blown assault. When a fresh perspective will trump a hardened point of view.

For instance:

  • When on the horns of a dilemma, take a step back. Have a good long look at what it is you’re up against. Again, size it up. Examine it. Scrutinize it. Then take a peek beyond its threatening exterior and identify with it. Make peace with it, because at the end of the day you’re in this together, whether you like it or not.

  • When faced with a sizeable challenge, look it squarely in the eye and welcome it. Open your arms and embrace it. Then pull up your boot straps and steadily forge ahead, one soul soothing step at a time.

  • Again, life isn't always easy or fair, and in the likely event it throws something slightly unexpected your way tactfully divert around it or gently shove it aside. Don't sweat the small shit. Simply reset. Then move on.

  • If doubts and demons are your archenemy give ’em their due, but never a second thought. Instead, remain fiercely focused on the work at hand, because time and again, it is here where lives change and people ultimately prevail.

This, in a nutshell, is how one “civilly” winds up victorious.

Of course not all of us will walk away triumphant. You could just as easily go down fightin’.

But hey, at least you did so with a fire in your belly and a whole lotta love in your heart.

Way to kick some affectionate ass!

See ya soon, till then keeep it up.
